Google Chrome is by far faster than FireFox and other top of the line browsers, under load when 7+ tabs open at a time in 1 or more windows. Chrome uses more resource because tabs do not share resources (i.e. each tab runs as a separate new process with it's own memory pool and CPU time), this significantly improves the performance. Think about it, how useful are your 2 or 4 GB of RAM if 40% or more is not used..., and how useful is your CPU if it is 90% idle..? Google Chrome utilizes the computer resources much better, you will have to sacrifice about 60MB of RAM per tab but you will gain a lot of performance. I notices performance improvements by as much as 400% on Google Chrome vs FireFox under Fedora 13, and Google Chrome 5.0.3 is at least 2x faster than FireFox 3.6.8 under Windows Vista Professional. I like everything about Google Chrome except for 2 things:
After a little research I found an easy way to fix my first dislike "Thumbnails View" problem. Here is what Thumbnails View looks like on 24" monitor, as you can see here is plenty of empty space... at least 75%.
I did some research and looked through Google Chrome feature request site, here is the best post of all that I found. Basically, there is no way in Chrome to increase the number of thumbnail on Thumbnails View, but there workaround is to use an extension. The extension is called Speed Dial, one of the nicest extension I have seen. It is pretty much identical to the speed dial in Safari and Opera, but this one is for Google Chrome. It has many configuration and it is very intuitive. To install the Speed Dial do the following:
Here is a sneak pick of what it will look like.
And here is a screenshot of speed dial configured to display 4 rows by 5 columns, which is perfect for 22" and 24" monitors (4 rows x 4 columns looks great as well). In the options of Speed Dial extension you can display up to 81 thumbnails.
Enjoy speed dialing... |
